Established in Perth in 1984, the AIS Hockey Scholarship program was the first AIS sport not to be based at its Canberra campus. Shortly after its inception, the AIS, together with the Australian Hockey Association, set up the Satellite Coaching Scheme to assist with identifying talent. In 1990, coaches who specialised in intensive training were appointed in each capital city. The AIS program now focused on training and coaching players in the national squad, and developing them into possible Australian players.
Working with the Hockey Australia High Performance program, AIS Hockey provides world class coaching and sports science along with national training facilities and services designed to support athletes of this demanding, fast-paced sport. Managed by 18 full time staff, the program has sports scientists, nutrition experts, psychologists, career educators and sports medicine practitioners available to players. Combined with successful, elite coaches from Hock Australia’s National Training Centre, athletes’ skills are nurtured and their talents developed.
The High Performance program, also features a cutting edge training facility at Perth Hockey Stadium, which includes two synthetic outdoor pitches, a recovery centre and gymnasium, and a seminar room and function centre.
A visiting athlete agreement scheme sees athletes from state institutes and academies of sport join the program for short term sessions. AIS Hockey is able to present a development pathway for athletes so they can experience high performance elite competition and hopefully be selected for the national squad of Australia. Indeed, the majority of AIS scholarship holders are current members of the male and female national squads.
