Launched in 2003, the AIS/ Cricket Australia Centre of Excellence for cricket offers the best sports science and sports medicine with cutting edge facilities and high class coaches. Identifying talent at state and territory levels, the AIS/CA are able to attract high performance athletes of both sexes. Based in Brisbane, the facilities on offer include playing a training fields, turf and synthetic practise nets, recovery plunge pools, weight training and dressing rooms and IT and office facilities and has trained many successful cricket sports stars. The men’s program runs from April to September each year, and with a focus on ensuring the success of athletes on an international stage in short, medium and long term time frames, the program is able to mix players with youth on their side and those who has first class experience.
A scholarship program through the AIS means that selectors can look at a five to ten year plan of succession for the national team, and identify areas of strength and weakness as the team develops. Scholarship recipients play in an an international tour as well as competing in a yearly emerging player’s tournament.
The women’s program selects up to twenty players to form an AIS/National team. Conducted over twelve months, players go to a three camps a year minimum, with progress being measured by testing, training diaries, coach state visits and more. Programs are individually tailored to each member of the squad and athletes attend specialist training in their home state as well.
